Cap'n John, a lieutenant on the squad, was asked to consult some of the
Pro Tour teams on their attempts at the spring classics. Out of charity
and pity, John accepted. He gave a breakfast pep talk and rode in the
Phonak Team car during the Tour of Flanders as well as hung out on the
Phonak bus until he realized he was sitting in someones spot. He
continued to make appearances at Ghent-Wevelgem and Paris-Roubaix
to sign autographs as well as boost TV ratings for the races. Race
organizers were overjoyed.
"We thought the Pro Tour would boost the popularity of our one day races, but that did
nothing compared to this."
